Lists, Color Cosmetics, Tips & Tutorials

Cosmetic powders have been around for thousands of years (though it took them a while to nix lead), and all the makeup wearers here in the office use at least some kind of powder in their beauty routine. But which powders are the best?! I ran around taking notes on everybody’s favourite powders that you need to try right now – no lead poisoning required.

Rachel: Fitcover Active Mineral Powder Foundation

We get new ranges through our doors almost daily, so it takes a lot to surprise us, but this one not only surprised Rachel - it converted her. Notoriously hard to colour match, Rach has found it difficult to find a powder that matches her perfectly. She is also notoriously unable to handle the humid heat that we get here in Sydney, so having a sweat proof powder is a dream for her.

Emily: Diorskin Forever Perfect Matte Powder

Emily used to be a translucent powder gal every day of the week, but with all her life choices (spicy food, alcohol, dairy etc.) exacerbating her rosacea she has had to transition to a high coverage powder. She loves being able to use it as a foundation on its own or in the t-zone to deal with excess oil (and to be honest, this dual use is the benefit of any powder foundation).

Becky and Steph: Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Steph, as one of our in-house makeup artists, has seen it all. Becky, our marketing manager, has not seen much. And yet, they both have the same favourite powder! Laura Mercier’s translucent powder has long been a staple in professional kits but has now become so iconic that even our makeup beginner Becky uses it. As a translucent powder, it mattifies the skin but feels SO soft on the skin.

Monica: Bare Minerals Mineral Veil Finishing Powder

While treating her acne with Accutane, Monica is very careful about what she puts on her skin – anyone who has had this treatment and/or chronic acne knows how sensitive skin can be! It is made without “animal products, parabens, gluten, talc, synthetic fragrance, PEG and tree-nuts,” making it not only great for sensitive skin but also vegan friendly.

Ash: Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder

Ash is an encyclopaedia of beauty knowledge, so when she gives a product recommendation, we all listen - and you should too. She loves Charlotte Tilbury’s powder due to the fact that it “gives a soft blur and knocks back shine without making the skin too flat.” Having a lightweight feel and appearance is super important for Ash, and she swears by this powder.

Fleur: Hourglass Ambient Light Powder

When Fleur is between botox appointments she does NOT want her fine lines exaggerated by a thick powder so she adores the finely milled powder from Hourglass. It helps to mitigate any oil, but also keeps the skin looking hydrated and dewy. Her colour of choice is the shade ‘Diffused Light’ which helps to hide redness and also gives the skin a radiant glow.

Mel: Australis Fresh and Flawless Pressed Powder

As the youngest member of our team, Mel is lucky enough to still get away with powder under her eyes and that is exactly what she uses this powder for. It gives her enough coverage to hide any eye bags after an all-night Greys Anatomy marathon as well as any other blemishes she needs covered.

Victoria: Fenty Pro Filtr Powder Foundation

Sometimes it feels like I mention Fenty in every single blog, but… they deserve it. A godsend for those with oily skin, Victoria loves this powder across her t-zone. The oils on her skin caused her foundation to wear off during the day, so this powder is great for a touch up to keep her acne scars covered.
