Color Cosmetics

As summer draws to a close, we have hit the books (read: rewatching Fall 2021 runway shows) to bring you a list of exciting trends for the new season. Even with a lot of color, shimmer and Y2K vibes these trends are wearable, versatile and suit almost everyone!

Chunky lashes

Falsies are out, and chunky lashes are in (who am I kidding – false lashes will never be out). By applying multiple layers of mascara on your top and bottom lashes your eyes will pop and look much larger. This retro-grunge look has been spotted everywhere from the pages of high fashion magazines to Tik Tok, and it is an easy way to add extra drama to any look.

Shop the trend:

We recommend the Lancome Hypnose Drama mascara to add volume and length. By layering it multiple times you’ll get the perfect spidery, chunky lashes of your dream.

Healthy skin

As consumer savviness grows, more and more people are learning that makeup only looks as good as the skin underneath it. This realisation has seen the rise of personalised, medicated, skin subscription services like Software and the growth of influencers like Skincare With Anja embracing their skin conditions and teaching their followers how to care for their skin.

Shop the trend:

Unfortunately, Software is currently only available in Australia (you can check it out here), we also adore Go-To Skincare and The Ordinary for simple, affordable and effective skincare.

90s shimmer and accent stickers:

Whip out your butterfly clips because the 90’s are back with a vengeance. This fall, expect to see a lot of shimmer on cheeks, eyes and in lip gloss. Accent stickers have also made a comeback on the runway, and we are loving it. Makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench created a starry series of looks for the Men's Fall 2021 Burberry runway show, creating “celestial” looks to “hark back to nature, this vastness of a night sky.”

Shop the trend:

The Urban Decay Stoned Vibes eyeshadow palette has a fun and on trend selection of shimmers. We also love the Chantecaille Les Perles Metallic eyeliner. To recreate Ffrench’s runway look, you can draw stars using the eyeliner or use eyelash glue to stick on stars like these.

Brow lamination:

Thick brows have been on trend for a long time now, but their iterations keep evolving. Alchemy Beauty Lab owner, Loren Gilbert, says that it has become popular with local influencers as well as “older clients who want a thicker brow.” Brow lamination has become one of the most popular brow treatments for Gilbert’s clients, with people flocking to get the sleek and fluffy look.

Shop the trend:

While we don’t recommend laminating your brows yourself (leave that to the pros like Loren), you can use soap brow products for a similar effect. We recommend the Westbarn Co Soap Brow Kit that has everything you need to get that great brushed up, fluffy brow look. If you want to use traditional soap, we recommend the Neutrogena Transparent Facial Bar due to its gentle ingredients with inbuilt glycerin (the compound that will hold your brows in place).

Pops of color:

This trend transcends seasons and has really become a trend for all of 2021. Bright colorful eyeshadows provide a bit of spunk as our wardrobes transition to the inevitable monochrome of fall and winter. There are colors to suit everyone – purple eyeshadows go great with green eyes, orange looks great with blue eyes, blue eyeshadow looks great with hazel eyes and EVERY color suits people with brown eyes.

Shop the trend:

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Pro Pigment Palette Vol. 2 has something to suit everybody with some beautiful neutrals thrown in too. Its fun color story will provide you with endless creative options. If you want to test the waters with color, we recommend the individual shadows available through Inglot – they have almost every color imaginable and are an affordable way to make a custom palette or are great if you only want one or two specific shades.

Deep berry lips:

After almost two years of wearing masks everywhere, lipsticks are finally making a comeback. A deep berry lip color adds instant glam to any look and is the perfect, moody color for fall. Paired with a simple eye look, a berry lip easily goes from day to night and suits almost everyone.

Shop the trend:

We adore Lisa Eldridge’s True Velvet Lip Colour and the YSL Vernis A Levres Water Stain in Cascade Bordeaux. Their matte finishes help with longevity, but putting a clear gloss (like the Fenty Beauty Gloss bomb) over the top will really make them pop.
